Hart County, Georgia

Hart County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. It was created December 7, 1853. As of 2000, the population was 22,997. The 2007 Census Estimate shows a population of 24,240. The county seat is Hartwell. Of Georgia's 159 counties, Hart County is the only one named after a woman, Nancy Hart. Lake Hartwell is also named for her.

Hartwell Dam

Hartwell Dam is concrete and embankment dam located on the Savannah River at the border of South Carolina and Georgia, creating Lake Hartwell. The dam was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1962 for the purposes of flood control, hydropower and navigation. The concrete and earthen structure spans 15,840 feet . The concrete section is 1,900 feet long and rises 204 feet above the riverbed at its apex.
