New Madrid Seismic Zone

The New Madrid Seismic Zone, sometimes called the New Madrid Fault Line, is a major seismic zone and a prolific source of intraplate earthquakes (earthquakes within a tectonic plate) in the southern and midwestern United States, stretching to the southwest from New Madrid, Missouri. The New Madrid fault system was responsible for the 1811–1812 New Madrid earthquakes and may have the potential to produce large earthquakes in the future.

East Prairie, Missouri

East Prairie is a city in Mississippi County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,176 at the 2010 census. In 1881, the area was originally known as Bell's Grade and Hibbard and developed as a result of the railroad. Its population was 298 at the 1890 census. In February of 2012, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck the area, not far from Sikeston, Missouri and Cairo, Illinois; the impact was felt across multiple states.
