The town is located 5.5 miles south-southeast of Fulton, Missouri, whose post office handles its mail as part of zip code 65251. Hams Prairie is named for Rev. John Ham, a Methodist minister who arrived in Callaway County in 1815 and cut his name on a tree at the edge of the prairie one year later.

Also known as Bonnot's Mill, the community was founded in 1852 by French settlers and was named for Felix Bonnot, the owner of a local mill. Millers were an integral part of their communities.
