Holt County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of 2010, the population was 10,435. Its county seat is O'Neill. Holt County is located in the Outback area of Nebraska. In the Nebraska license plate system, Holt County is represented by the prefix 36 (it had the thirty-sixth-largest number of vehicles registered in the county when the license plate system was established in 1922).

Elkhorn River

The Elkhorn River originates in the eastern Sandhills of Nebraska and is one of the largest tributaries of the Platte River, flowing 290 miles and joining the Platte just southwest of Omaha, approximately 1 mile (2 km) south and 3 miles (5 km) west of Gretna. Located in northeast and north-central Nebraska, the Elkhorn River basin encompasses approximately 7,000 mi² (18,000 km²).
