Wilderness Park

Wilderness Park is a 1,472-acre mostly-public conservancy located in southwest Lincoln, Nebraska. There are many separate branches of the park, some separated by roads including prominently S 14th St, a north-south street which dissects much of the south end of the park. The park is heavily wooded, but also includes some prairieland.

1894 Rock Island railroad wreck

The 1894 Rock Island railroad wreck occurred when a locomotive carrying two passenger cars was sabotaged on August 9, 1894 in Lincoln, Nebraska. The train was purposely derailed from a 40-foot trestle which today passes above the Jamaica North Trail at Wilderness Park in Lincoln, Nebraska, killing 11. To date, the sabotage is one of the largest instances of mass murder in the state of Nebraska, along with the 1958 killing spree of Charles Starkweather, and the Westroads Mall shooting of 2007.

Lincoln Southwest High School

Lincoln Southwest High School is a public secondary school located in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA and rests on 74 acres adjacent to Wilderness Park. It is part of the Lincoln Public Schools school district. When the school opened its doors in August 2002, it had 1,150 students from grades 9-12, and 77 teachers. Since its opening, the school has expanded to more than 1,800 students.

Jamaica North Trail

The Jamaica North Trail is a redevelopment of 6.5 miles of the abandoned Union Pacific Railroad segment running through southwest Lincoln, Nebraska, USA. According to an October 2003 press release, the city of Lincoln purchased the 8.2-mile railway segment for $605,000. Construction began in May 2006, the groundbreaking ceremony took place in mid-June 2006, and the trail itself was slated to open in late October 2006.
