As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 8,097, reflecting a decline of 161 (-1.9%) from the 8,258 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 568 (+7.4%) from the 7,690 counted in the 1990 Census. It is the home of Monmouth University.

Monmouth University

Monmouth University is a private university located in West Long Branch, New Jersey, United States. Founded in 1933 as Monmouth Junior College, it became Monmouth College in 1956, and later Monmouth University in 1995 after receiving its charter. There are about 4,300 full-time and 444 part-time undergraduate and 1,750 graduate students, as well as 251 full-time faculty members. About 73% of faculty members hold Ph.D. s or other terminal degrees in their field of study.

William T. Boylan Gymnasium

William T. Boylan Gymnasium is a 2,500-seat multi-purpose arena in West Long Branch, New Jersey. It was built in 1965 and was home to the Monmouth University Hawks basketball team. The Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament was held there in 1996 and 2004. The basketball teams moved into the Multipurpose Activity Center at the start of the 2009-2010 season.
