Carova Beach, North Carolina

Carova Beach or Carova is an unincorporated community in Currituck County in the extreme northeast corner of North Carolina, USA. The community, which is found on Currituck Banks, north of Bodie Island, can only be accessed by boat or by four-wheel drive vehicle since there are no paved roads connecting Carova Beach to either neighboring settlements of Sandbridge in Virginia Beach, Virginia or Corolla, North Carolina and no bridge connecting it to Knotts Island, North Carolina, on the mainland.

Wash Woods, Virginia

Wash Woods was an unincorporated town located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Princess Anne County in the extreme southeastern corner of Virginia. The site of the former town is currently located within False Cape State Park in the Virginia Beach area. According to popular legend, the community was developed by survivors of a shipwreck in the 16th or early 17th century. The village’s church and other structures were built using cypress wood that washed ashore from a shipwreck.

Knotts Island, North Carolina

Knotts Island is a small unincorporated community in Currituck County, North Carolina. The community is located on a marshy island, bordered by the Currituck Sound, North Landing River, Back Bay, and Knotts Island Bay. Knotts Island is home to Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge. Knotts Island is only accessible over land from Virginia Beach, Virginia using Princess Anne Road.

Monkey Island, North Carolina

Monkey Island is a remote, natural island located in Currituck Sound, North Carolina and is part of the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. It is named for the Pamunkey nation that once inhabited the area. The island was once the site of the Monkey Island Hunting Club, which remains standing today. Approximately half of the island is forested and has long supported a large colony of wading birds. The island is often visited by deer that swim from at least a mile away.

Currituck, North Carolina

Currituck is an unincorporated community in extreme northeastern North Carolina, USA. Situated along the Currituck Sound, it serves as the county seat for Currituck County. Currituck is part of the Inner Banks region and is one of the state's few unincorporated county seats. The community harbors the Knotts Island Ferry, which provides free shuttles across the sound to Knotts Island. North Carolina Highway 168 (Caratoke Highway) and Courthouse Road are the community's most prominent roads.
