Smithton is a borough in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 444 at the 2000 census. Smithton's early industry was in coal mining, coke ovens, and shipping goods produced in the valley of Jacobs Creek. Layton Bridge

The Layton Bridge is a Pratt truss bridge over the Youghiogheny River, originally built for the Washington Run Railroad,construction began 1893 and it was completed in 1899. The last train crossed in 1931. It was converted to automotive use in 1933, and connects Layton, Pennsylvania with Perryopolis, Pennsylvania via a one-lane tunnel, near the suspected location of the eighteenth century Spark's Fort. The bridge has not been painted in recent years and its members are now corroded.

Washington Run Railroad

The Washington Run Railroad was a branch line connected to the B&O Railroad. Although primarily a freight carrier, it also had a passenger car, and ran a passenger service as well. It ran from Layton, Pennsylvania, crossed the Youghiogheny River on a bridge, then passed through a tunnel to continue to Perryopolis, Pennsylvania. From there, it continued to Star Junction, Pennsylvania, on a track that ran parallel to Pennsylvania Route 51.
