Fannin Battleground State Historic Site

Fannin Battleground State Historic Site is located east of Goliad in Goliad County, Texas. The site commemorates the Battle of Coleto Creek fought on March 19 and 20, 1836 between forces commanded by Col. James W. Fannin and Mexican Gen. Jose de Urrea. The site is operated by the Texas Historical Commission and features a stone obelisk, interpretive exhibit, group pavilion, and picnic area.

Coleto Creek Reservoir

Coleto Creek Reservoir is a reservoir on Coleto Creek and Perdido Creek located in Fannin, Texas, 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Victoria, Texas. The surface of the lake extends into Victoria and Goliad counties. The reservoir was formed in 1980 by the construction of a dam by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority to provide a power station cooling pond for electric power generation. Coleto Creek Reservoir is a venue for outdoor recreation, including fishing and boating.

Battle of Goliad

The Battle of Goliad was the second skirmish of the Texas Revolution. In the early-morning hours of October 9, 1835, rebellious Texas settlers attacked the Mexican Army soldiers garrisoned at Presidio La Bahía, a fort near the Mexican Texas settlement of Goliad. La Bahía lay halfway between the only other large garrison of Mexican soldiers and the major Texas port of Copano.

Goliad massacre

The Goliad Massacre, set in the town of Goliad on March 27, 1836, was an execution of Republic of Texas soldier-prisoners and their commander, James Fannin, by the Mexican Army. The massacre was reluctantly carried out by General Jose de Urrea under orders of the President of Mexico, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna.

Goliad, Texas

Goliad is a city in Goliad County, Texas, United States. It had a population of 1975 at the 2000 census. Founded on the San Antonio River, it is the county seat of Goliad County. It is part of the Victoria, Texas, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Goliad is located on U.S. Highway 59, named also for the late U.S. Senator Lloyd M. Bentsen.
