Marion County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 56,418. Its county seat is Fairmont. Marion County was named in honor of General Francis Marion, known in history as "The Swamp Fox".

Farmington, West Virginia

Farmington is a town in Marion County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 375 at the 2010 census. It is best known for being the site of the 1968 Farmington Mine disaster.

Farmington Mine disaster

The Farmington Mine disaster was an explosion that happened at approximately 5:30 a.m. on November 20, 1968, at the Consol No. 9 coal mine north of Farmington and Mannington, West Virginia, USA. The explosion was large enough to be felt in Fairmont, almost 12 miles away. At the time, 99 miners were inside. Over the course of the next few hours, 21 miners were able to escape the mine, but 78 were still trapped.

Barrackville, West Virginia

Barrackville is a town in Marion County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,302 at the 2010 census. Barrackville was founded in 1767 by William "Indian Billy" Ice and named in honor of an early settler, John Barrack. It was incorporated January 25, 1968.
