Turpan Depression

The Turpan Depression or Turfan Depression is a fault-bounded trough located around and south of the city-oasis of Turpan, in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region in far western China, about 150 kilometres southeast of the regional capital Ürümqi. It includes the third lowest exposed point on the Earth's surface (dry Lake Ayding, −154 metres), after the Dead Sea and Lake Assal (Djibouti). It is entirely below sea level. By some measures, it is also the hottest and driest area in China.

Turpan water system

The Turpan water system or Turfan water system in Turpan, located in the Turpan Depression, Xinjiang, China, is a qanat system adapted by the Turpan people. The word karez, derived from the same word (Kariz, کاریز) in Persian means "well" in the local Uyghur language. Turpan has the Turpan Water Museum dedicated to demonstrating its karez water system, as well as exhibiting other historical artifacts.

Emin Minaret

The Emin Minaret or Imin Ta stands by the Uyghur Mosque located in Turfan, Xinjiang, China. At 44 meters (144 ft) it is the tallest minaret in China. The Qing Dynasty conquered this largely Muslim region in the 1750s by defeating the Mongols and the Uyghurs with their superior weaponry in a series of battles. As conquerors, they ruled the local population with a light hand and were tolerant of the Muslim religion.

Turpan Prefecture, also known as Turfan Prefecture or Tulufan Prefecture, is located in the east of Xinjiang, People's Republic of China. It has an area of 69,324 square kilometres and a population of 570,000 (2003).

Ayding Lake

Aydingkol, Aydingkul or Ayding is a lake in the Turpan Depression, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, PR China. At 154 m below sea level, it is the fourth lowest land point on Earth. This lake is now totally dried, and very muddy and salty. In ancient times, Ayding Lake was known as juéluòwǎn (觉洛浣). The Uyghur derived name Aydingköl means "moon lake", due to the lake having a layer of white salt along its edge, giving the appearance of a shining moon.
