Flaming Mountains
The Flaming Mountains or Gaochang Mountains are barren, eroded, red sandstone hills in Tian Shan Mountain range, Xinjiang, China. They lie near the northern rim of the Taklamakan Desert and east of the city of Turpan. Their striking gullies and trenches caused by erosion of the red sandstone bedrock giving the mountains a flaming appearance at certain times of the day. The mountains are approximately 100 kilometres long and 5–10 km ( ) wide, crossing the Turpan Depression from east to west.

Piqan County
Shanshan (Piqan) County is a county within the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and is under the administrative jurisdiction of the Turpan Prefecture. It contains an area of 39,548 km. According to the 2002 census, it has a population of 210,000. The county is named after the ancient Shanshan Kingdom, although the kingdom was actually located mostly outside of the borders of the modern county, in the Lop Nur area. The county seat is in Shanshan Town.

Subashi Formation
The Subashi Formationis a late Cretaceous formation from the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of western China. Initially described by Dong Zhiming in 1977, the formation contains remains of Tarbosaurus which were initially described as a separate taxon Shanshanosaurus huoyanshanensis. Remains of a sauropod, likely Nemegtosaurus, and a hadrosaurid, likely Jaxartosaurus, have also been found. The formation is located in the Flaming Mountains region of Xinjiang, north of the Turpan Depression.

Lianmuqin
Lianmuqin is a town in Shanshan County, Xinjiang. It is located on China National Highway 312 about 20 km west of Shanshan Town (Shanshan County's county seat), on the way to Turpan. Located in the northern foothills of the Flaming Mountains, Lianmuqin is known for a number of paleontological finds. The Lianmuqin Formation is named after it, and the Subashi Formation, after the nearby village of Subashi, which, however, is presently part not of Lianmuqin Town but of Tuyugou Township.

Gaochang
Gaochang, also called Qara-hoja or Kara-Khoja, is the site of an ancient oasis city built on the northern rim of the inhospitable Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, China. The site is also known in published reports as Chotscho, Khocho, Qocho, or Qočo. During the Yuan and Ming dynasties, Gaochang was referred to as "Halahezhuo" (Qara-khoja) and Huozhou. A busy trading center, it was a stopping point for merchant traders traveling on the Silk Road.
