Orkdal Church

Orkdal Church is a parish church in the municipality of Orkdal in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. The church is located in Fannrem, about 6 kilometres south of Orkanger. The church is located in the Orkdal parish which is part of the Orkdal deanery in the Diocese of Nidaros. The church site has been occupied for about 1000 years. The original church existed during the 12th century.

Battle of Orkdal

The battle of Orkdal was according to Heimskringla the first attempt at resistance against Harald Fairhair's conquests in Trøndelag. Heimskringla narrates how Harald was massacring and burning his way through Trøndelag, without any opposition, until he came down to Orkdal. Here king Gryting had gathered a large group of men to make a stand against the invading forces. Harald was victorious and Gryting was taken prisoner while a large part of his army was killed.

Gagnåsvatnet

Gagnåsvatnet or Gangåsvatnet is a lake in the municipality of Orkdal in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. The 5.49-square-kilometre lake is located about 9 kilometres southwest of Orkanger and about 6 kilometres west of Fannrem in the Orkdalen valley. The water flows into the lake from the Songa river which flows out of the lake Våvatnet on the border of Orkdal and Snillfjord. The water leaves the lake through the Skjenaldelva river which ultimately flows into the Trondheimsfjord.

Orkdalen

Orkdalen or Orkladalen (English: the valley of Orkla) is a traditional Norwegian district in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. In the early Viking Age, before Harald Fairhair, Orkdalen was also a petty kingdom. The district encompasses the valley municipalities that surround the Orkla River. The municipalities in the district are Rennebu, Meldal, and Orkdal.

Orkla (river)

Orkla is the longest river in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. The 179-kilometre long river follows the Orkdalen valley, discharging into the Orkdalsfjord, an arm of the Trondheimsfjord, at the village of Orkanger. The river originates in the lake Orkelsjøen in the municipality of Oppdal. The river runs through the municipalities of Oppdal, Tynset, Rennebu, Meldal, and Orkdal. The municipalities are all in Sør-Trøndelag county, except for Tynset which is in Hedmark county.
