Winchcombe Abbey

Winchcombe Abbey is a now-vanished Benedictine abbey in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, this abbey was once the capital of Mercia, an Anglo Saxon kingdom at the time of the Heptarchy in England. The Abbey was founded c. 798 for three hundred Benedictine monks, by King Offa of Mercia or King Kenulf. In its time, it was the burial place of two Mercian princes, Kenulf and his son St. Kenelm.

Winchcombeshire

Winchcombeshire, an ancient county in the South West of England, in the 10th and 11th centuries, developed around its county town, Winchcombe. It appears that it had a separate existence as a petty kingdom prior to this time. King Coenwulf of Mercia is associated with the region before becoming king. A link with the earlier kingdom of Hwicce has been surmised, given the apparent link between Coenwulf's family and that of the kings of Hwicce.

Sudeley Castle

Sudeley Castle is a castle located near Winchcombe, Gloucestershire, England. The present structure was built in the 15th century and may have been on the site of a 12th-century castle. The castle has a notable garden, which is designed and maintained to a very high standard. The chapel, St. Mary's Sudeley, is the burial place of Queen Catherine Parr (1512–1548), the sixth wife of King Henry VIII, and contains her marble tomb.

Winchcombe railway station

Winchcombe railway station serves Winchcombe in Gloucestershire, England, although it is actually located in the village of Greet. It is located on the Honeybourne Line which linked Cheltenham and Stratford-upon-Avon and which was opened by the Great Western Railway in 1906. The station closed to passengers in 1960, although the line itself remained open for freight and diversionary use until 1976, when a freight train derailed near Winchcombe and damaged the track.

Gretton, Gloucestershire

Gretton is a small village located at the foot of the western scarp of the Cotswolds, about 9 miles north of Cheltenham in the English county of Gloucestershire. The place-name 'Gretton' is first attested in 1175, and means 'village or town on gravelly soil'. The village has a small primary school for children aged 4 to 11 years old, with four classes catering for about eighty children. The Anglican Church in the village is Christ Church.
