Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn

Cuween Hill Chambered Cairn is a chambered cairn near Finstown on the main island of Orkney. Cuween Hill dates to around 3,000 BCE. It is a cairn of similar design to Maeshowe, but on a smaller basis. Cuween Hill was constructed as a burial place by a group of Neolithic farmers. It is located on top of a hill, and it has been suggested it overlooked the farms of those who used it. The entry to the tomb is down a narrow passage, partly open to the sky.

Mainland, Orkney

The Mainland is the main island of Orkney. Both of Orkney's burghs, Kirkwall and Stromness, lie on the island, which is also the heart of Orkney's ferry and air connections. Seventy-five per cent of Orkney's population live on the island, which is more densely populated than the other islands of the archipelago. The lengthy history of the island's occupation has provided numerous important archaeological sites and the sandstone bedrock provides a platform for fertile farmland.

Damsay

Damsay is an island in the Orkney archipelago in Scotland. It is approximately 18 hectares in extent and rises to only 11 metres above sea level. It is situated in the Bay of Firth north of the Orkney Mainland near Finstown. Nearby is the smaller islet of Holm of Grimbister.

Rennibister Earth House

Rennibister Earth House is located on the Mainland of Orkney, in Scotland. It is located by the south eastern shore of the Bay o' Firth, in a farm yard and is accessed by a hatch in the roof of the earth house and by a ladder. Its location is more picturesque than that of its counterpart, Grain Earth House. The souterrain was discovered when a threshing machine caused the roof to collapse on 12 November 1926 and seems to date from c. 1000 BC.
