In 2010, the population of Tensas Parish was 5,252; it is the least-populous of all sixty-four parishes. The 2011 estimated population declined again—to 5,066 persons. Tensas Parish is 56 percent African American. The name Tensas is derived from the Taensa people.

It consists of some 3,000 acres of unusually clear water, particularly suited for swimming, boating, and fishing.
