The 1999 United States Open Championship was the 99th U.S. Open, held from June 17–20 at Pinehurst Resort Course No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Payne Stewart won his second U.S. Open and third major championship with a 15-foot par putt on the final hole to defeat Phil Mickelson by one stroke. Stewart would not get a chance to defend his title in 2000 as he died less than five months later in a plane crash.

Six years was the shortest gap between U.S. Opens at the same site since 1946. Michael Campbell won his first career major in a surprising collapse by two of the best players in the world.
