Mitchell School

Mitchell School is a public school in Mitchell in the U.S. state of Oregon with an enrollment of about 70 students. The K-12 school is the only school in the Mitchell School District. Mitchell School operates a boarding residence for up to 20 students in grades 9 through 12. These students come from all over the world as well as from central Oregon. During the 2009–2010 school year, they included students from Brazil, China, Germany, Japan and Norway.

Painted Hills

Painted Hills is one of the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, located in Wheeler County, Oregon. It totals 3,132 acres and is located 9 miles northwest of Mitchell, Oregon and 75 miles east of Bend. Painted Hills is named after the colorful layers of its hills corresponding to various geological eras, formed when the area was an ancient river floodplain. The black soil is lignite that was vegetative matter that grew along the floodplain.
