Bee Rock Tunnel

Bee Rock Tunnel is a former railroad tunnel that is located in Appalachia, Virginia. Though known locally as the "world's shortest railroad tunnel", at 47 feet, 7 inches long, it is 1 foot, 7 inches longer than the Westmoreland Tunnel, in Gallatin, Tennessee. Both tunnels, however, are longer than the Backbone Rock Tunnel near Crandull, Tennessee, which at around 20 feet long, is also known locally as the "world's shortest railroad tunnel."

Mountain Empire Community College

Mountain Empire Community College is a two-year college located in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, and is one of the 23 schools in the Virginia Community College System. The college serves residents of Dickenson, Lee, Scott, and Wise counties, as well as the City of Norton. The first classes were offered in the Fall of 1972. Dr. Terrance Suarez became the school's fifth president in January 2002.

Appalachia High School

Appalachia High School, located in Appalachia, Virginia is part of Wise County Public Schools. Appalachia High educates approximately 350 students ranging from 8th through 12th grades. Appalachia High School was awarded a Bronze Medal in U.S. News & World Report's 2009 Best High Schools. Appalachia will be consolidating with neighboring Powell Valley High School, located in Big Stone Gap.
