Cooma, New South Wales

Cooma is a town in the south of New South Wales, Australia. It is located 115 km south of the national capital, Canberra, via the Monaro Highway. It is also on the Snowy Mountains Highway, connecting Bega with the Riverina. The town has a population of 6,301. Cooma is the main town of the Monaro region. It is 800 metres above sea level. The name could have derived from an Aboriginal word Coombah, meaning 'big lake' or 'open country'.

The station broadcasts on multiple frequencies to reach the townships within the Snowy Mountains region. Snow FM runs live and local for most of the day, and taking the Hamish & Andy drive show from 4pm-6pm. National news is provided every half hour during breakfast, and on the hour across the rest of the day and is provided by Fairfax from Sydney.

Cooma Correctional Centre, an Australian minimum to medium prison for males and females, is located in Cooma, New South Wales. The centre is operated by Corrective Services NSW an agency of the Department of Attorney General and Justice of the Government of New South Wales. The centre detains sentenced and unsentenced felons under New South Wales and/or Commonwealth legislation.

Cooma-Monaro Shire

Cooma-Monaro Shire is a local government area located in the Monaro region of southern New South Wales, Australia. The area is named after the former Cooma Municipality and the former Monaro Shire, that were amalgamated to create it. On 11 February 2004, the Shire absorbed a small part of the former Yarrowlumla Shire, near Michelago. The Mayor of the Cooma-Monaro Shire Council is Dean Lynch, an independent politician.
