Goomeri, Queensland

Goomeri is a town in the South Burnett region of Queensland, Australia. The town is located on the intersection of the Burnett, Bunya and Wide Bay Highways, 235 kilometres from the state capital, Brisbane. Part of the Gympie local government area, at the 2006 census, Goomeri had a population of 488. The town's name is allegedly derived from the Aboriginal name for "broken shield".

Murgon

Murgon is a town in Queensland, Australia. It is situated on the Bunya Highway 270 kilometres north-west of the state capital, Brisbane. Murgon is in the region of Queensland known as the South Burnett, the southern part of the Burnett River catchment. Attractions of Murgon include winemaking, fishing on the nearby Bjelke-Petersen Dam and gem-fossicking. Industries include peanuts, dairy farming, beef and cattle production and wine.

Murgon fossil site

The Murgon fossil site is a paleontological site of early Eocene age in south-eastern Queensland, Australia. It lies near the town of Murgon, some 270 km north-west of Brisbane. The Murgon site is important as the only site on the continent with a diverse range of vertebrate fossils dating from the early Paleogene Period (55 million years ago, only 10 million years after the extinction of the dinosaurs), making it a crucial period in mammal evolution.

Shire of Murgon

The Shire of Murgon was a local government area in the South Burnett region of Queensland, Australia. The shire covered an area of 664.7 square kilometres, and existed as a local government entity from 1914 until 2008, when it amalgamated with several other councils in the South Burnett area to become the South Burnett Regional Council. Major activities in the shire include peanuts, dairy farming, beef and cattle production and wine.

Bjelke-Petersen Dam

Construction of Bjelke-Petersen Dam near Cherbourg in Queensland, commenced in 1984 and finished in 1988. It created the lake that was named Lake Barambah after the original property in the region. The dam supplies water to the South Burnett region, mostly for irrigation purposes. The dam wall is 540 m long and rises 34 m . The wall is an earth and rock fill structure with a central clay core, which can hold back 134,900 ML of water. The dam is generally shallow.
