Wheal Hughes
Wheal Hughes was a copper mine in the 19th century, but is now a tourist attraction in Moonta, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. The mine is named after Walter Watson Hughes a Scottish sea captain who had emigrated to South Australia in 1840 and purchased land in the vicinity of Moonta for keeping sheep. Minerals were discovered on his property at Moonta in 1860 by James Boor, a shepherd working for Hughes at the time .

Moonta is a town on the Yorke Peninsula of South Australia, 165 kilometres north-northwest of the state capital of Adelaide. It is one of three towns known as the Copper Coast or "Little Cornwall" for their shared copper mining history. It is about 17 kilometres south of Kadina, site of the famous Wallaroo Mines, and 14 kilometres southeast of the port of Wallaroo. At the 2006 census, Moonta had a population of 3,350.

The council was formed in May 1997 through the amalgamation of the former District Council of Northern Yorke Peninsula and Corporation of the Town of Wallaroo. The Council area is divided into four wards and is represented by a mayor and ten councillors.
