Khancoban

Khancoban is a small town in Tumbarumba Shire, New South Wales, Australia. The town is located 567 kilometres from the state capital, Sydney and 13 kilometres from the state border with Victoria, in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, near the upper reaches of the Murray River. At the 2006 census, Khancoban had a population of 281. Khancoban Post Office opened on 7 November 1876.

Alpine Way

The Alpine Way is a State highway in New South Wales, Australia. The Alpine Way starts near Jindabyne on the eastern side of the Snowy Mountains. It runs south-west past Thredbo and crosses the crest of the Great Dividing Range at Dead Horse Gap at an altitude of 1580 metres. It then winds around the western side of the range along the upper reaches of the Murray River, past the Geehi River to Khancoban, connecting with the Murray Valley Highway.

The Shire of Upper Murray was a local government area about 400 kilometres northeast of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of 2,459.81 square kilometres, and existed from 1920 until 1994.

Although the power station is physically located in the state of New South Wales, it has, since 1 July 2008 been allocated to the Victorian region of the National Electricity Market.
