The Shire of Murrindindi is a local government area in Victoria, Australia in the north-east of the state, and includes the towns of Alexandra, Eildon, Kinglake and Yea. It has an area of 3,889 square kilometres, and at the 2006 Census it had a population of 13,672. The shire is named after the locality of Murrindindi which is near its geographical centre.

Murrindindi, Victoria

Murrindindi is a locality along the valley of the Murrundindi River in Victoria, Australia in the Shire of Murrindindi local government area. The nearest town is Yea, Victoria. The name comes from the pastoral run begun by squatter Peter Snodgrass in 1837, which was originally (and probably correctly) spelled Murrundindi. In the Woiwurrung language of central Victoria the name means “living in the mountains”. However, the inaccurate translation “mist of the mountains” is sometimes given.

Yea River

The Yea River is a river in central Victoria, Australia. It flows in a northerly direction through the town of Yea before entering the Goulburn River. The river, like the town, is named in honour of Colonel Lacy Walter Yea — a British Army colonel killed during the Crimean War in 1855, the year that Yea was founded.

Glenburn, Victoria

Glenburn is a small town in the Yarra Ranges region northeast of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is in the local government area of the Shire of Murrindindi. At the 2006 Census, Glenburn had a population of 179. The Post Office opened in 1902 and was known as Glenburn Creamery until 1907.
