Schmitten Tunnel

The Schmitten Tunnel is the bypass tunnel for the town of Zell am See in Austria and a road tunnel on the Pinzgau Road (Pinzgauer Straße, B 311) in the Austrian state of Salzburg. The Schmitten Tunnel has a length of 5,111 metres and acts as a relief road for the through road in Zell am See, that is normally very busy. The tunnel stretches from the suburb of Zell am See-Süd to the northern end of the town of Zell am See.

Lake Zell

Lake Zell is a small freshwater lake in the Austrian Alps. It takes its name from the city of Zell am See which is located on a small delta protruding into the lake. The lake is 4 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide. It is up to 69 metres deep and at an elevation of 750 metres above sea level. The lake is fed by numerous small mountain streams in summer, but only one stream flows out of it into the river Salzach. In winter the lake completely freezes and is used for winter sports.

Kaprun disaster

The Kaprun disaster was a fire that occurred in an ascending funicular train in the tunnel of the Gletscherbahn Kaprun 2 funicular in Kaprun, Austria, on 11 November 2000. The disaster claimed the lives of 155 people, leaving 12 survivors (10 Germans, 2 Austrians) from the burning train. The victims were skiers on their way to the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier.
