Ötztal

The Ötztal is a 65-kilometer long alpine valley in the Austrian state of Tyrol. The Ötztaler Ache river flows through the valley in a northern direction. The Ötztal separates the Stubai Alps in the east from the Ötztal Alps in the west. The northern end of the valley is at the confluence of the Ötztaler Ache and Inn rivers, 8 kilometers east of Imst and 50 kilometers west of Innsbruck.

Rettenbach glacier

The Rettenbach glacier is a glacier located near Sölden, in the Ötztal Alps of Austria. During the winter the glacier is accessible by cable car and from spring time by car, using the Gletscherstraße. During autumn, usually in October, the 'FIS Ski world cup' is opened with the first competition of the season on the glacier. The glacier is also an attractive area for regular skiers and plays an important role in connecting the main ski area of Sölden with the Tiefenbach glacier.

Obergurgl

Obergurgl is a village in the Ötztal Alps in the Austrian state of Tyrol. Located in the municipality of Sölden, the village has approximately 400 year-round inhabitants, and is mainly a tourist resort. Obergurgl became famous in 1931, when the Swiss explorer Auguste Piccard was forced to land on the nearby Großer Gurgler Ferner glacier during his historic balloon flight, during which he became the first man to fly into the stratosphere.

Wildspitze

Wildspitze is the highest mountain in the Ötztal Alps and in North Tyrol, as well as the second highest mountain in Austria after the Großglockner. The nearest higher mountain is the Ortler, 48.5 kilometres away in South Tyrol.

County of Tyrol

The County of Tyrol, Princely County from 1504, was a State of the Holy Roman Empire, from 1814 a province of the Austrian Empire and from 1867 a Cisleithanian crown land (Kronland) of Austria-Hungary. Today its territory is divided between the Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, a small part of the Italian region of Veneto (Cortina d'Ampezzo and other villages) and the Austrian state of Tyrol. Both regions are today associated again in the Euroregion Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino.
