Padre Cícero

Padre Cícero (Crato, March 24, 1844 - Juazeiro do Norte, July 20, 1934) was born Cícero Romão Batista in Ceará, Brazil. He was the son of Joaquim Romão Batista and Joaquina Vicência Romana. When he was 6 years old, he started to study with professor Rufino de Alcântara Montezuma. One important thing about his infancy is his pledge of chastity, made when he was twelve. This was influenced by him reading about the life of São Francisco de Sales.

Crato, Ceará

Crato is a city of 110,000 inhabitants on the banks of the river Granjeiro in the south of the state of Ceará, in the northeast of Brazil. It was founded 21 June 1764 by the Capuchin friar Carlos Maria de Ferrara. Originally a small village whose population were principally native Kariris, it gained official status as a city 17 October 1817. The Brazilian city of Crato was named in honor of Crato, a Portuguese town founded in the a 13th century.

Juazeiro do Norte

Juazeiro do Norte is a city in the state of Ceará state in northeastern Brazil. It is located 528 km south of the state capital Fortaleza in the arid sertão. The municipality has a population of 246.515 (2008 official estimate) and covers 248 km². Juazeiro do Norte is best known as the base of the charismatic priest and politician Padre Cícero (Cícero Romão Batista) (1844-1934). A pilgrimage in his honour takes place every November, attracting thousands of followers.
