Confederation Bridge
The Confederation Bridge (French: Pont de la Confédération) is a bridge spanning the Abegweit Passage of Northumberland Strait, linking Prince Edward Island with mainland New Brunswick, Canada. It was commonly referred to as the "Fixed Link" by residents of Prince Edward Island prior to its official naming. Construction took place from the autumn of 1993 to the spring of 1997, costing C$1.3 billion. The 12.9-kilometre long bridge opened on 31 May 1997.

Abegweit Passage
Abegweit Passage is the narrowest part of the Northumberland Strait, comprising the 13-kilometre wide portion between Cape Tryon, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick. Tidal currents in this area can reach up to 4 knots. This portion of the strait is now spanned by the Confederation Bridge. The word Abegweit is derived from the Mi'kmaq word for Prince Edward Island, Epekwit'k, meaning "cradled (or cradle) on the waves.

Cape Jourimain is a headland in the western part of the Northumberland Strait on its southern shore, 3 kilometres west of New Brunswick's easternmost point at Cape Tormentine. Cape Jourimain is formed by Jourimain Island and Trenholme Island, which have been connected to the mainland since 1965-1966 by an artificial causeway built using infill as part of an approach road and railway for an aborted causeway across the Abegweit Passage of Northumberland Strait to Borden, Prince Edward Island.

Borden-Carleton
Borden-Carleton is a Canadian town located on the south shore of Prince Edward Island, fronting on the Northumberland Strait. The town was created through a merger on April 12, 1995 of the original port town of Borden (an incorporated town) and the farming community of Carleton. The town of Borden opted to demote its status to a village in light of a declining tax base with the pending completion of the Confederation Bridge and the closure of the Marine Atlantic ferry service.
