Giant Magellan Telescope

The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) is a ground-based extremely large telescope planned for completion in 2020. It will consist of seven 8.4 m diameter primary segments, with the resolving power of a 24.5 m primary mirror and collecting area equivalent to a 22.0 m one. The telescope is expected to have over 5-10 times the light-gathering ability of existing instruments. Two mirrors are cast and the mountain top has been prepared for construction.

Magellan Telescopes

The Magellan Telescopes are a pair of 6.5 m diameter optical telescopes located at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. The two telescopes are named after the astronomer Walter Baade and the philanthropist Landon T. Clay. First light for the telescopes was on September 15, 2000 for the Baade, and September 7, 2002 for the Clay.

Magellan Planet Search Program

The Magellan Planet Search Program is a ground based extrasolar planet search device which began gathering data in December 2002. It utilizes the MIKE echelle spectrograph mounted on the Magellan Telescopes which are twin, 6.5m Magellan II (Clay) telescope located within the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile.

Las Campanas Observatory

Las Campanas Observatory (LCO) is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by the Carnegie Institution for Science (CIS). It is located in the southern Atacama Desert of Chile in the Atacama Region approximately 100 kilometres northeast of the city of La Serena. The LCO telescopes and other facilities are located near the northern end of a 7 km long mountain ridge. Cerro Las Campanas, near the southern end and over 2,500 m high, is the future home of the Giant Magellan Telescope.

Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment

The Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment or OGLE is a Polish astronomical project based at the University of Warsaw that is chiefly concerned with discovering dark matter using the microlensing technique. Since the project began in 1992, it has discovered several extrasolar planets as a side benefit. The project is led by Professor Andrzej Udalski, who is a co-author of the discovery of OGLE-2005-BLG-390Lb.
