Ha'ava
Ha‘ava is the Marquesan name of the 4 km (2.5 mi. ) wide channel that separates Tahuata from Hiva Oa, in the southern Marquesas Islands. The French name for the passage is Canal du Bordelais. The seas move through the channel at speeds of up to 20 knots.

Vaitahu
Vaitahu is the name of a bay and valley in western Tahuata. It is the site of most important village on that island. Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira landed here in 1595. In 1774, Captain James Cook landed here, and it was here that Admiral Dupetit-Thouars signed the treaty of annexation of the Marquesas to France, in 1842. The first Christian missionaries in the Marquesas Islands settled there in 1797, first Protestants and later, Roman Catholics.

Ta'a Oa
Ta‘a ‘Oa is the South Marquesan name of a wide bay on the southern coast of Hiva ‘Oa in French Polynesia. The bay is widely known in English as the Bay of Traitors, and in French as Baie des Traitres. The highest point on Hiva ‘Oa, Temetiu, rises majestically above the western end of the bay. Atuona, the administrative center of the southern Marquesas, is located on a small inlet, Atuona Bay (called Vevau in Marquesan), on the north shore of Ta‘a ‘Oa.

Hanakee is the name of a small rocky islet lying off the southern coast of Hiva Oa, separating Atuona Bay from Ta‘a Oa. The island's only vegetation is some small shrubs and grasses.

Atuona Bay
Atuona Bay (French Baie d'Atuona or Baie Tahauku) is a small inlet on the north shore of Ta‘a ‘Oa, on the southern coast of Hiva ‘Oa. The bay is traditionally called Vevau in Marquesan. At the head of the bay lies Atuona, chief town of the southern Marquesas Islands. Atuona Bay is separated from the excellent harbor of Taha Uku to its east, by a headland called Feki, and from westernmore extensions of Ta'a Oa by a small rock called Hanakee.
