Sipacate-Naranjo National Park

Sipacate-Naranjo National Park is located along the Pacific coast of Escuintla in Guatemala . The park includes mangrove forests, lagoons and sandy beaches and covers an area of 20 km long and 1 km wide, stretching between the coastal towns of Sipacate and Naranjo. Mangrove species found in the park are white mangrove, black mangrove and several Rhizophora species, including the red mangrove. Transitional tree species include the Mexican palmetto and the guiana chestnut.

San José, Escuintla

San José is a small town where the weather is usually hot. It is a municipality in the Escuintla department of Guatemala. The municipal seat is the port city of Puerto San José the old port. The municipality also contains Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala's main Pacific Ocean port.

Puerto San José

Puerto San José is a city on Guatemala's Pacific Ocean coast, in the department of Escuintla. It contains about 20,000 people, making it the largest place along the Pacific coast of Guatemala. It was the Pacific port for Guatemala, but this was superseded in the 20th century by Puerto Quetzal, a few kilometers to the east of the town. The Puerto Quetzal complex is the major employer in the town. The local tourist industry caters largely for weekenders from Guatemala City.

1942 Guatemala earthquake

The 1942 Guatemala earthquake occurred at 17:37 local time on August 6 and had ratings of 7.7 on the moment magnitude scale and 7.9 on the surface wave magnitude scale. The epicenter was located off the southern coast of Guatemala, and it was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded there. The earthquake caused widespread damage in the west-central highlands of Guatemala. Thirty-eight people died in the earthquake.

Puerto Quetzal

Puerto Quetzal is Guatemala's largest Pacific Ocean port. It is important for both cargo traffic and as a stop-off point for cruise liners. It is located in Escuintla department, alongside the city of Puerto San José, which it superseded as a port in importance to the country's maritime traffic during the 20th century.
