Motul de San José

Motul de San José is an ancient Maya site located just north of Lake Petén Itzá in the Petén Basin region of the southern Maya lowlands. It is a few kilometres from the modern village of San José, in Guatemala's northern department of Petén. A medium sized civic-ceremonial centre, it was an important political and economic centre during the Late Classic period (AD 650–950).

Tayasal (archaeological site)

Tayasal is a Maya archaeological site located in present day Guatemala. Tayasal is a corruption of Tah Itza ("Place of the Itza"), a term originally used to refer to the core of the Itza territory in Petén. The bulk of the site’s artifacts date to the Postclassic Period. As many as fifty burials and twelve caches have been recovered from Tayasal.

Santa Elena, El Petén

Santa Elena is located on the shores of Lake Petén Itzá in the Petén department of Guatemala. It is connected by a causeway to its sister town of Flores (the capital of the Petén department) and the two are often referred to as just Flores. It is the location for Flores International Airport, which is located just outside the town.

Flores, El Petén

Flores is the capital of the Petén department of Guatemala. It is located at {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:16|54|N|89|54|W||| | |name= }}. The population is 13,700 (2003). Flores is also the seat of the municipality of Flores (population 22,600). The old part of the city is located on an island on Lake Peten Itza, connected to the mainland by a short causeway. On the mainland is the suburb Santa Elena and, to the West, a contiguous municipality San Benito.
