Xalbal River

The Xalbal River is a river of Guatemala. Its sources are located in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes in the department of El Quiché, where the river is called Río Xaclbal or Río Chajul. The Xaclbal river flows northwards down the tropical lowlands of Ixcan where it is called Río Xalbal, and crosses the border with Mexico, where it joins the Lacantún River, a tributary of the Usumacinta river. The Guatemalan part of Xaclbal river basin covers an area of 1,366 km2.

Aguacatán is a municipality in the Guatemalan department of Huehuetenango. It is situated at 1670m above sea level. It has a population of 41,000. It covers a terrain of 300km2.

Xacbal Hydroelectric Dam

The Xacbal Hydroelectric Dam is a reinforced concrete gravity dam and power plant spanning the Xacbal River in the municipality of Chajul, Guatemala. A 10.35 m high dam diverts the river's water flow to a sand filter and on through an open conduction channel to a daily regulation reservoir located outside the river channel. A 4.7 km conduction tunnel with at diameter of 4.65 m, directs the water through a 615 m long pressure pipe (diameter 3.55 m) to the power house.

Cunén

Cunén is a municipality in the El Quiché department of Guatemala. The municipality covers 168 square kilometers. At an average altitude of 1,827 meters above sea level, its climate is temperate. It is 68 kilometers from the departmental capital, Santa Cruz del Quiché, as measured by paved road. Tourist attractions include Las Grutas and the El Chorro waterfall.
