Öræfajökull

Öræfajökull is an ice-covered volcano in south-east Iceland. It is the largest active volcano in the country, and on its north-western rim is Hvannadalshnúkur, the highest peak in Iceland. Geographically Öræfajökull is considered part of the Vatnajökull glacier, and the area covered by glacier is inside the bounds of Vatnajökull National Park. Öræfajökull has erupted twice in historical time. In 1362 the volcano erupted explosively, with huge amounts of tephra being ejected.

Skaftafell

Skaftafell is a preservation area in Öræfi, southeast Iceland. It used to be a manor farm and a national park, but has been a part of Vatnajökull National Park since its establishment in 2008.

Svartifoss

Svartifoss (Black Fall) is a waterfall in Skaftafell National Park in Iceland, and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns, which gave rise to its name. Other well-known columnar jointing formations are seen at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, Devil's Tower in Wyoming, USA and on the island of Staffa in Scotland. The base of this waterfall is noteworthy for its sharp rocks.

Skeiðará

The river Skeiðará is a relatively short glacier river (about 30 km long). It has its source on the glacier Skeiðarárjökull, one of the southern arms of the Vatnajökull in the south of Iceland. In spite of the short length, this river has a bad reputation. It is especially feared because of the frequent glacier runs that can be fatal.
