The ranges were formed during the Precambrian era (3.8 billion to 540 million years ago). Minerals contained in these hills include sandstone and shale interbedded with limestone. The ranges are bounded by the Rayalaseema uplands to the west and northwest, and the Nandyal Valley to the north. Tirupati, a major Hindu pilgrimage town is located in the hills.

The Seshāchalam Hills is a mountain range that spreads in parts of Chittoor and Kadapa districts in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The hills range has been designated as Seshāchalam Biosphere Reserve on 20 September 2010. The decision was based on the proposal submitted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. This biosphere reserve covers an area of about 4,755.997 square kilometres .
