West Garo Hills district

West Garo Hills is an administrative district in Garo Hills of the state of Meghalaya in India. Tura town is the administrative headquarters of the district. The district occupies an area of 3714 km² and has a population of 515,813 (as of 2001). As of 2011 it is the second most populous district of Meghalaya, after East Khasi Hills. West Garo Hills district is located at the westernmost part of Meghalaya.

Tura, Meghalaya

Tura is a city and a municipality in West Garo Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. One of the largest towns in Meghalaya, Tura is a valley located at the foothills of the Tura Hills and right below the Tura Peak. The climate in Tura is moderate throughout the year and has a large number of interesting and unexplored areas. The native god Durama was believed to reside in the hills. The name Tura is said to be a corruption (by the British) of the god's name.

Don Bosco College, Tura

Don Bosco College, Tura was established in the year 1987 to provide education to the people of Meghalaya. The college has an infrastructure, staff strength of over 100 teaching and support personnel. The college can catch over 2000 students from the various states of North East India.

Garo Hills

The Garo Hills are part of the Garo-Khasi range in Meghalaya, India. They are inhabited mainly by tribal dwellers, the majority of whom are Garo people. Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, is located in this range. It is one of the wettest places in the world. The range is part of the Meghalaya subtropical forests ecoregion. People who reside in the Garo Hills are known as the Garos. Besides the Garo hills, there are Garo settlements in the plains of Assam and Bangladesh.
