Gunungsitoli

Gunungsitoli is the capital city of Nias regency, North Sumatra province, Indonesia, but is also an independent municipality within the province. It is located at {{#invoke:Coordinates|coord}}{{#coordinates:1|17|N|97|37|E||| | |name= }}. It is a coastal city located on Nias island. Nias island is located in the Indian Ocean, on the west part of Sumatra. On 28 March, 2005, the 2005 Sumatra earthquake destroyed parts of the city and caused casualties.

Nias

Nīas is an island off the western coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Nias (Kepulauan Nias) is also the name of the archipelago, containing the Hinako archipelago. Nias Island covers an area of 5,121.3 km (including minor offshore islands). It is mostly a lowland area rising to around 800 m above sea level. There were 756,762 inhabitants on the island (including minor offshore islands) at the 2010 Census.

1861 Sumatra earthquake

The 1861 Sumatra earthquake occurred on February 16, 1861. It was the last in a sequences of earthquakes that ruptured adjacent parts of the Sumatran segment of the Sunda megathrust. It caused a devastating tsunami which led to several thousand fatalities. The earthquake was felt as far away as the Malay peninsula and the eastern part of Java. The rupture area for the 2005 Sumatra earthquake is similar to that estimated for the 1861 event.
