Veleia (Italy)

This is about the Roman town in Italy. See also Veleia (Spain). Veleia, an ancient town of Aemilia, Italy, situated about 20 miles south of Placentia. It is mentioned by Pliny among the towns of the eighth region, though the Veleiates were Ligurians by race. Its inhabitants were, in the census of Vespasian, found to be remarkable for their longevity. Nothing further was known of it until 1747, when some ploughmen found the famous Tabula alimentaria, now in the museum at Parma.

Stadio Leonardo Garilli

Stadio Leonardo Garilli is a multi-use stadium in Piacenza, Italy. It is currently used mostly for football matches and the home of Lupa Piacenza S.S.D.. The stadium was built in 1969 and was renovated in 1993 passing from 12,000 to the current 21,608 when the former Piacenza were promoted.

Battle of the Trebia

The Battle of the Trebia was the first major battle of the Second Punic War, fought between the Carthaginian forces of Hannibal and the Roman Republic in December of 218 BC, on or around the winter solstice. It was a resounding Roman defeat with heavy losses, and yet some 10,000 and more Romans, over 2.5 legions, were victorious on their part of battlefield and retreated with honor to Placentia.

Bobbio Abbey

Bobbio Abbey is a monastery founded by Irish Saint Columbanus in 614, around which later grew up the town of Bobbio, in the province of Piacenza, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. It is dedicated to Saint Columbanus. It was famous as a centre of resistance to Arianism and as one of the greatest libraries in the Middle Ages, and was the original on which the monastery in Umberto Eco's novel The Name of the Rose was based.

Piacenza Cathedral

Piacenza Cathedral (Italian: Duomo di Piacenza), is a Roman Catholic church in Piacenza, Italy. It was built between 1122 and 1233 and is one of the most valuable examples of a Romanesque cathedral in northern Italy. It is the seat of the diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio. The Duomo has a total external length of 85 m, and a façade height of 32 m, measures which make it the largest Romanesque church in Emilia-Romagna.
