Miramare

Miramare Castle is a 19th-century castle on the Gulf of Trieste near Trieste, northeastern Italy. It was built from 1856 to 1860 for Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, later Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota of Mexico, based on a design by Carl Junker. The castle's grounds include an extensive cliff and seashore park of 22 hectares designed by the archduke.

Orto Botanico dell'Università di Trieste

The Orto Botanico dell'Università di Trieste (4.2 hectares) is a nature preserve and botanical garden operated by the University of Trieste, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, northern Italy. The garden was established in 1963 on the grounds of Villa Valerio, a chocolate baron's former estate, shortly after it became university property. In 1968 two small greenhouses were added. The garden's most recent catalog was published in 1990; since then the garden has not been fully maintained.

Nabrežina

Nabrežina (Italian: Nabresina, renamed in 1927 as Aurisina) is a town in the karst part of the comune of Duino-Aurisina near Trieste in a region of Slovene minority in Italy. It lies 15 kilometres north-west from Trieste and has a total of 2406 inhabitants (2003), according to the census 60% of them Slovenes.

Barcola

Barcola is a seaside neighbourhood of Trieste, Italy. To go to Barcola from the centre of town take "viale Miramare" going in the direction of Venezia. Barcola is about 3 km from the train station. It is best known after the Barcolana regatta, a European sailing race that happens every year in October. Trieste is a popular place for locals to go swimming and sunbathing and a long promenade links the area with nearby Miramare Castle.

Free Territory of Trieste

The Free Territory of Trieste was a city-state situated in Central Europe between northern Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, facing the North part of the Adriatic Sea, under direct responsibility of the United Nations Security Council in the aftermath of World War II. The Free Territory was established on 10 February 1947 by a protocol of the Treaty of Peace with Italy in order to accommodate an ethnically and culturally mixed population in a neutral independent country.
