Fort Fuentes was a military fort built on the hill of Montecchio or Monteggiolo near Colico in the province of Lecco, in Lombardy, Italy. It was built by the Spanish governor of Milan, Don Pedro Enríquez de Acevedo, Count of Fuentes, to command the Pian di Spagna and the strategic Trivio di Fuentes, the crossroads between the Valtellina, the Valchiavenna and the Alto Lario, in order to defend the northern border of the Spanish domain against the Grisons to the north.

Mera (river)
The Mera (Maira in Switzerland) is a river in Switzerland and Italy. Its source is near the Maloja Pass, in Graubünden, Switzerland. It flows west through the Val Bregaglia (Bergell) and crosses the Italian border near Soglio. It is joined by the Acquafraggia close to Piuro, and then turns south at Chiavenna, just before it receives the river Liro from the right at Prata Camportaccio. The Mera ends in Lake Como, near Sorico in the Province of Como.

Lago di Mezzola is a small (5.9 km²) lake in the Italian region of Lombardy. It lies between the Pian di Spagna to the south, which divides it from Lake Como and is an ecologically important wetland habitat, and the Piano di Chiavenna to the north, which leads up to Chiavenna. Both are crossed by the river Mera which is Lago di Mezzola’s most important inflow, as well as its sole outflow, and which connects it to Lake Como.
