Tuscan Archipelago

The Tuscan Archipelago is a chain of islands between the Ligurian Sea and Tyrrhenian Sea, west of Tuscany, Italy. The archipelago contains the islands of Gorgona, Capraia, Elba (the largest island of the group), Pianosa, Montecristo, Giglio, and Giannutri; all of which are protected as part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Orto dei Semplici Elbano

The Orto dei Semplici Elbano (1 hectare) is a botanical garden located at 160 meters elevation next to the Eremo di Santa Caterina in Rio nell'Elba on the island of Elba, Province of Livorno, Italy. It is open daily except Mondays in the warmer months; an admission fee is charged. The garden was established in 1997 for the study of the bio-diversity of plants on Elba and elsewhere in the Tuscan Archipelago.

BOAC Flight 781

On 10 January 1954, British Overseas Airways Corporation Flight 781 a de Havilland DH.106 Comet 1 registered G-ALYP, took off from Ciampino Airport in Rome, Italy en route to Heathrow Airport in London, England on the final leg of its flight from Singapore. At about 10:00 GMT, the aircraft suffered an explosive decompression at altitude and crashed into the Mediterranean Sea killing everyone on board. The accident aircraft G-ALYP was the third Comet built.
