The island is 11 kilometres long and has since the eighteenth century been bounded to its seaward side by large embankments. Marco Polo
Marco Polo was a Venetian merchant traveler whose travels are recorded in Livres des merveilles du monde, a book which did much to introduce Europeans to Central Asia and China. He learned the mercantile trade from his father and uncle, Niccolò and Maffeo, who traveled through Asia, and apparently met Kublai Khan. In 1269, they returned to Venice to meet Marco for the first time.

Brenta (river)
The Brenta is an Italian river that runs from Trentino to the Adriatic Sea just south of the Venetian lagoon in the Veneto region. During Roman era, it was called Medoacus and near Padua it divided in two branches, Medoacus Maior (Great Medoacus) and Medoacus Minor (Small Medoacus); the river changed its course in early Middle Ages, and its bed through Padua was occupied by Bacchiglione.

Bacchiglione
The Bacchiglione (Latin Medoacus minor) is a river that flows through northern Italy. It rises in the Alps and empties into the Gulf of Venice, on the Adriatic Sea, near Chioggia. It flows past a number of cities, including Vicenza and Padua, and acted for many centuries as a significant waterway up to Vicenza, after which it ceases to be navigable. Recently, the Bacchiglione has gained a reputation for containing water dangerous to drink.

Malamocco
Malamocco is one of the three narrow inlets in the enclosing coastal dune bar that connect the Venetian Lagoon with the Adriatic Sea, together with the Lido and Chioggia inlets. The little locality of Malamocco, in old texts given as Metamaucum, is situated at the southern end of the Lido island, from which a narrow circular canal separates it, a reminder of the active fishing port once located here.
