The region is divided into four departments: Aboisso, Adiaké, Grand-Bassam and Tiapoum. The region is virtually the same as the territory of the pre-colonial kingdom of Sanwi which as late as 1969 attempted to break away from Côte d'Ivoire and form an independent state. The current King of Sanwi is Nana Amon Ndoufou V (since 2002).
