The Ébrié Lagoon lies in Côte d'Ivoire, separated for almost all of its length from the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow coastal strip. The 100 km (60 mi) long lagoon is linked to the sea by the Vridi Canal, while the Comoë River flows into it. The lagoon averages 4 km (2½ mi) in width, and 5 m (16 ft) in depth. Kenya Airways Flight 431 was an international scheduled Abidjan–Lagos–Nairobi passenger service, operated with an Airbus A310-300, that crashed into the sea, off the coast of Côte d'Ivoire, on 30 January 2000 at 21:09:24 GMT, shortly after takeoff from Félix Houphouët-Boigny International Airport. There were 179 people on board, of whom 169 were passengers. It was the first fatal accident for Kenya Airways.

Lagunes (literally meaning "lagoons" in French) is one of the 19 regions of Côte d'Ivoire. The region's capital is Abidjan. Covering 14,200 km², its population (2002 est. ) is 4,210,200. The region is divided into six departments: Abidjan, Alépé, Dabou, Grand Lahou, Jacqueville and Tiassalé. Lagunes is traversed by the northwesterly line of equal latitude and longitude.
