Ishioka, Ibaraki is a city located in Ibaraki, Japan. As of February 1, 2011, the city has an estimated population of 79,474, with 29,434 households, and the density of 368.58 persons per km². The total area is 215.62 km². The city was founded on February 11, 1954. On October 1, 2005 the town of Yasato, from Niihari District, was merged into Ishioka.

Iwama dojo

Iwama is an important historical location from the development of Aikido. The former town has a famous dojo built by the founder of aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, who lived there from 1942 until his death in 1969. It has become "a Mecca to the aikido community. " This dojo is also where Morihiro Saito, one of the founder's closest students, learned and taught aikido from 1946 until 2002. The lineage of aikido that has been passed on through Saito is highly acclaimed.
