National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Kanoya is a national university in Kanoya, Kagoshima, Japan, founded in 1981. It is the only national physical education university in Japan. Four alumni participated in the swimming and volleyball events in the Beijing Olympics, including Athens Olympics swimming gold medalist Ai Shibata. Kagoshima Bay

is a deep inlet on the coast of Japan. Kagoshima Bay is on the south coast of the island of Kyūshū. The port city of Kagoshima and its well-protected harbor lie on the bay's western coast. The Bombardment of Kagoshima by British warships in the bay took place in 1863. The 1914 eruption of the volcano Ontake, located on the island of Sakurajima in the bay, severely damaged Kagoshima.

Kushira, Kagoshima

Kushira, Kagoshima was a town located in Kimotsuki District, Kagoshima, Japan. On January 1, 2006 Kushira, along with the town of Aira, also from Kimotsuki District, and the town of Kihoku, from Soo District, was merged into the expanded city of Kanoya and no longer exists as an independent municipality. As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 13,575 and the density of 206.12 persons per km². The total area was 65.86 km².
