Yaku, Kagoshima

Yaku, Kagoshima was a town located on the southern half of Yakushima (Yaku Island) in Kumage District, Kagoshima, Japan. On October 1, 2007 Yaku was merged with the town of Kamiyaku, also from Kumage District, to form the new town of Yakushima. As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 7,008 and a population density of 28.96 persons per km². The total area was 242.03 km².

Yakushima

, one of the Ōsumi Islands, has an area of about 500 km² and a population of roughly 15,000 and lies to the south of Kyūshū in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The Vincennes Strait (Yakushima Kaikyō) separates it from Tanegashima. The highest point on the island is Miyanoura-dake at 1,935 metres (6,360 ft). It is covered in dense forest noted especially for old growth Cryptomeria trees known as sugi in Japan and magnificent rhododendrons.

Jōmon Sugi

is a large cryptomeria tree located on Yakushima, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Japan. It is the oldest and largest of nearly 2,000-year-old-growth cryptomeria trees on the island, and is estimated to be between 2,170 and 7,200 years old. Other estimates of the tree's age include "at least 5,000 years", "more than 6,000 years", and "up to 7,000 years old". The tree's name is a reference to the Jōmon period of Japanese prehistory.

Kamiyaku, Kagoshima

Kamiyaku, Kagoshima was a town located on the northern half of Yakushima (Yaku Island) in Kumage District, Kagoshima, Japan. On October 1, 2007 Kamiyaku was merged with the town of Yaku, also from Kumage District, to form the new town of Yakushima. As of 2003, the town had an estimated population of 6,903 and the density of 23.09 persons per km². The total area was 298.95 km².
