Kinkasan

is a small sacred island in Miyagi Prefecture in north-eastern Japan. It is considered one of the Three Holiest Places of the Tōhoku region, along with Dewa Sanzan and Osorezan. It lies in the Pacific Ocean off the Oshika Peninsula. There is a shrine on the island, called Koganeyama-jinja. Kinkasan is 9.5 km in area, and its highest point is the pyramid-shaped Mount Kinka, which stands at 445 m .

Tashirojima

is a small island in Ishinomaki, Miyagi, Japan. It lies in the Pacific Ocean off the Oshika Peninsula, to the west of Ajishima. It is an inhabited island, although the population is quite small (around 100 people, down from around 1000 people in the 1950s). It has become known as "Cat Island" due to the large stray cat population that thrives as a result of the local belief that feeding cats will bring wealth and good fortune.

April 2011 Miyagi earthquake

The April 2011 Miyagi earthquake was a magnitude 7.1 Mw earthquake, with an epicentre off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, approximately 66 kilometres east of Sendai, Japan. The earthquake was classified as an aftershock of the March 11 Tōhoku earthquake, and occurred at 23:32 JST on Thursday, 7 April 2011. Immediately after the earthquake, several tsunami warnings were issued for the northeastern coast of Honshu; however, they were all canceled 90 minutes later.

San Juan Bautista (ship)

San Juan Bautista (originally called Date Maru, 伊達丸 in Japanese) was one of Japan's first Japanese-built Western-style sailing ships. She crossed the Pacific in 1614. She was of the Spanish galleon type, known in Japan as nanban-sen (南蛮船, lit. "Southern Barbarian ships"). She transported a Japanese diplomatic mission of 180 people during the first leg of their trip to the Vatican as envoys to Pope Paul V, headed by Hasekura Tsunenaga and accompanied by the Spanish friar Luis Sotelo.
