Iejima
Iejima (伊江島), known in English as Ie Shima during World War II, is an island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, lying a few kilometers off the Motobu Peninsula on Okinawa Island. The island measures 20 kilometres in circumference and covers 23 square kilometres . As of December 2012 the island had a population of 4,610. Most islanders live in Ie village, which has a ferry connection with the town Motobu on Okinawa Island. Iejima is generally flat.

Bates (19 September 1919 – 7 December 1941), who was killed on board USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Bates was launched on 6 June 1943 at the Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard, Inc. , Hingham, Massachusetts; sponsored by Mrs. Elizabeth Mason Bates, mother of Ensign Bates; and commissioned on 12 September 1943, with Lieutenant Commander E. H. Maher, USNR in command.
