Nakagawa, Nan'yō, Yamagata

Nakagawa, Nan'yō, Yamagata is a district in the city of Nan'yō, Yamagata, Japan. The two kanji characters that form the name "nakagawa" mean "inside" or "medium" (size) and "river". Nakagawa was the site of a quarry, and today its most Important Cultural Property is the 33 Images of Kannon carved on the south face of Mount Iwabu. These Kannon images were created in the Edo period.

Akayu, Nan'yō

Akayu, Nan'yō is a district in the city of Nanyo, Yamagata, Japan. Akayu is most famous for Akayu Onsen (赤湯温泉), a series of ryokan famed for their natural hot-springs which are believed to have medicinal properties. The town's name, which is literally translated as "red hot water", derives from a story in 1093. It is said that the feudal chief of Tohoku, Minamoto no Yoshitsuna took a wounded soldier to a hot spring bath. His blood immediately turned the water red and the wound closed.

Kumano Shrine (Yamagata)

is a historic shinto shrine in Miyauchi in the city of Nan'yō, Yamagata, Japan. It dates from the 9th century, and is one of only three large Kumano shrines in Japan. The shrine is located on a small mountain in the district of Miyauchi in Nanyo. Two main features of the shrine are a giant tree which locals believe to be several hundred years old, and a traditional tsurigane bell. The bell is unique because during World War II, most large iron bells in Japan were melted down for their material.
